Rick, a native Houstonian, has been a well-rounded percussionist since his early teens. He comes from a family of musicians with his grandfather being the founder and director of a popular south Texas Latin orchestra during the 1930’s-50’s. Inspired by his mother, uncles and grandfather, Rick along with several cousin, took up music to continue the family tradition. Throughout high school, Rick was a member of the marching and stage band. In his early twenties, played drums with several local Tejano bands and recorded with “Richard & the Little Latins”. He also went on to play with different bands covering a variety of genres such as Swing, Country & Western, Classic Rock, Latin, Blues, Soul and Zydeco. He was also the founder of a local 70’s soft rock band known as “Sterling Feather”. After a long hiatus, Rick returned to the music scene in 1994 by joining a Christian Rock band and shortly afterwards as a percussionist/vocalist for Christian music artist “Tony Melendez & the Toe Jam Band” where they toured throughout Texas and New Jersey. Prior to joining the “Rich Latimer Band” Rick had also played for other local bands such as; “TJ Funk”, “Bossa 2” Latin Jazz combo and “Band-o-Brothas” Blues band. Rick first met Rich Latimer when they both sat in a gig for “Eddie Rojas & Los Vatos of Fun” band. It was there that Rich extended the invitation for Rick to audition for the band. During his hiatus from music, Rick returned to his roots and immersed himself in the cultural arts by mastered the art of Mexican Folk dance and where eventually founded and directed the largest adult Mexican folk dance troupe in the history of Houston. Under Rick’s artistic direction, the dance troupe received high accolades by performing for the late and former Texas Governor Ann Richards, former President George H. Bush, countless presentations throughout the USA and Mexico and culminating a rewarding career with a week of presentations in Tokyo, Japan. “As a member of this band, I look forward to entertaining you and providing you with memorable and fun music as I jam with this talented, wonderful and joyful bunch of musicians” – Rick Serrata
